The new version of Donnie Darko is 10+ better then the original theatrical cut. There are at least 20 new scenes in the movie, not only that but there are also new sound design elements and digital effects.
A few of he songs in the moves gave been switched around, there was suppose to be a different song for the opening sequence, but they could not secure the rights at the time. The song that opened the movie is put in the Halloween party scene.
The greatest thing about Donnie Darko is that it lends itself to different interpretations as to what the movie is about. It really depends on what you bring into the movie yourself upon seeing it, for me I saw it as a story about a savior figure, a Gnostic savior figure specifically. Although one could look at it as a story about a Super Hero, in fact some of the extras scenes in the directors cut hint to this more then it had in the theatrical release.
Extras include an all new commentary track by the director, with a special guest, the director of "Clerks"
Some scenes have been lengthened, including a mention of the old 80's TV show "Who's the Boss"
The book (The Philosophy of Time Travel) featured in the plot of the movie is used as a story telling device, title cards of sorts, like in the vampire film Nosferatu.
As a savior figure Donnie is the only one who is aware of what is going on, all the other inhabitance of the town exist in a state of ignorance, interestingly enough; owing to the Gnostic inclinations in the film, at least in terms of my own interpretation, there are a few people who share Donnie's insight, all of which a female.
But ultimately Donnie Darko is about what you yourself think it is about, that the genius of the film.
For fans of Donnie Darko this new cut of the film is a 'must have' item, to watch the directors cut is like seeing the movie for the first time.
