The Matrix is a 1999 science fiction-action film written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski, starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Hugo Weaving. The film depicts a future in which reality as perceived by most humans is actually a simulated reality created by sentient machines to pacify and subdue the human population, while their bodies' heat and electrical activity are used as an energy source. Upon learning this, computer programmer "Neo" is drawn into a rebellion against the machines, involving other people who have been freed from the "dream world" and into reality. The film contains many references to the cyberpunk and hacker subcultures; philosophical and religious ideas such as René Descartes's evil genius, the Allegory of the Cave; and homages to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and dystopian fiction.

I can rememebr seeing this way back when and all the spoofs it garnered when it came to the acrobatics. I didn't really get it the first time, but as I saw it a couple times on tv I started to get into the story more and more. The sequels got father and farther away from the depth of the first one. the sequels seemed to air more on the isde of standard action movie themes and shots.

I was blown away by the original movie, and I remember having some deep discussions wit my teenage son over the concepts presented within the movie.
Unfortunately, like the previous poster noted, the sequels went in a very different "Hollywood" direction.
